Fernando Alonso had a controversial penalty applied in Jeddah after the race - in fact, right after he’d been on the F1 podium at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. It meant he had his trophy literally taken from his hands moments after the podium ceremony, and it was given to George Russell over in the TV interview area instead. But a few hours later, it was Alonso’s once again, in a confusing situation that was F1’s first real penalty controversy of 2023. As amazing as Fernando Alonso and Aston Martin have been this season, it isn’t all bright skies and bunny rabbits. The Stroll’s are a very proud family and this team is their team. Since they took over Aston Martin, Lance has been beaten by his teammate every year but it’s been close at times, not this season though. Fernando Alonso is 41 years of age and is still at the top of his game in Formula 1. With 2 world championships, it still doesn't paint a picture of how good he is. Fernando came from humble beginnings but quickly impressed the world during his karting and junior career, and quickly found himself in Formula 1. He won two consecutive championships with Renault and became the youngest double world champion ever. He has battled with the very best, like Michael Schumacher, Kimi Raikkonen, Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton. Fernando always found a way, and even though he didn't win a world championship with Ferrari, you still always felt like he was a chance. F1 Alonso Aston Martin and FIA News ■ The Saudi Grand Prix proved that although Mercedes is on the right path, they have much more to do before they can challenge Red Bull seriously. The Saudi Grand Prix ended with Red Bull taking up the top 2 spots on the podium, Mercedes in 4th and 5th position, and Fernando Alonso squeezed right between the two teams. Overall, the team seemed faster than in Bahrain, and their tire degradation was much better than in the last race as Lewis Hamilton managed to race on the medium tires for 30 laps straight with still some grip left in the rubber. Red Bull was still one second quicker per lap than both Mercedes and Aston Martin, and they seemed untouchable throughout the race. Behind the monstrous Red Bull’s there was this season’s shining light, Fernando Alonso. His third place finish in Saudi Arabia was his 100th trip to the podium and didn’t he look ecstatic to be there. After all the years of pain and suffering we have had to watch Alonso struggle through, it is fantastic to see him reinventing himself and looking as joyful as he did all those years ago at Renault. That was until he got a ten second penalty after the race for something that happened on lap 18. And then, after handing the trophy over to George Russel, they rescinded the penalty anyway. It was a complete mess and despite George sounding like he was a model sports man, it might have been his team behind it in the first place. So did Mercedes snitch on Aston Martin? And does the FIA need to make rule changes to stop this happening for a third race in a row?
