In this video, we'll be exploring a gardening project that is perfect for the colder months: adding color to your winter garden! We'll be hauling in lots of plants that Jerry grew this fall and planting them in our entrance gardens, creating a beautiful statement for the cooler months . Southern gardeners are blessed to be able to continue planting in their gardens throughout the winter, and today we are making a big winter garden statement by adding tons of annual color! Methods for creating water points for wildlife in your garden | Garden Design | Gardening Australia

Millie adds a few water points for wildlife and plants out a few species to encourage them to visit.  Subscribe 🔔 🤍 Millie’s garden is ambitious, in a relatively small space she is trying to grow food and flowers, create a multi-use functional outdoor space for people and offer habitat to the wild visitors. One of the simplest ways to do this is to add water. Just like we include a diversity of plant species, offering a diversity of water points will cater for different visitors.   WATER POINT ONE:  In a small garden bed near the backdoor, Millie wants to set up a simple water pot. I am using an old copper pot, which in my experience works well as a low-maintenance pond. A small amount of copper dissolves in the water, preventing algae growth and disrupting the lifecycle of mosquito larvae. The copper means it is not suitable for fish or frogs but works well as a bath and drinking point for birds. It also offers a great little microclimate for a range of water plants.   To set up a water pot: - Pick a position that gets at least 6 hours of sun and ensure it I relatively level   - Put a shallow layer of gravel in the base  - Place a few bricks and rocks to act as planting shelves and landing perches  - Fill with water. NOTE If you are planning to add fish, wait at least 24 hours to ensure contained chemicals such as chlorine can evaporate, or add a water conditioner. When it comes to plants, those that like water are as diverse as those on land, with some preferring to be fully submerged, and others just liking wet feet. In many cases, aquatic plants grow well in small pots, as they can access water and nutrients from the water around them. All can be potted in a similar manner – - Use a heavy sandy loam, not lightweight, bark-based potting mix.  You don’t want loads of nutrients in the mix either, as they will just dissolve into the water.    - Position the plant quite low in the container and cover the mix with a layer of clean sand and a layer of gravel.  This holds everything in place when plants are submerged.   - Add a stick to ensure safe passage in and out of the water for any small birds.   WATER POINT TWO:   As well as the ground-level water pot, Millie is keen to take her habitat game to new heights!  The boundary fence is made of ironbark posts and steel mesh, and from the window, she has observed stacks of birds use it to stop and survey the surrounding garden. That indicates it will also be a great spot to safely provide water for them, out of reach of predators.    - She attaches 2 galvanised steel brackets to a post and sits a large terracotta saucer on top.  Some silicone is used to hold the saucer lightly in position, and rocks are added to balance the bath and offer a route in and out of the bath. - As a shallow elevated bath, this will need constant filling, so to ensure a consistent supply she installs some dripper to an irrigation timer.   - This runs 1-2 times a day to flush the bath with clean water and ensure the birds can set their watch to it. The fence line is already heavily planted, with climbing native and exotic clematis, espaliered feijoas and even a callistemon.  But there is always space for more!  Under the drip of the baths Millie plants a native groundcover, austral bugle. WATER POINT THREE : The last water point offer is down low, a saucer of water placed on the ground near a habitat pipe installed for reptiles. To make the offering even more enticing, Millie plants some ruby saltbush.   We all spend a lot of spend a lot of time thinking about the garden.  Carefully planning plantings and displays, timing vegie sowing for each season, and even planning garden parties!  But the moments that fill the garden heart with joy are when those unexpected wild visitors pop in.  And there are so many ways you can ensure they have an open invitation.     Featured Plants: NARDOO - Marsilea drummondii  SWAMP GOODENIA - Goodenia humilis  AUSTRAL BUGLE  - Ajuga australis  RUBY SALTBUSH - Enchylaena tomentosa  _ Gardening Australia is an ABC TV program providing gardening know-how and inspiration. Simple methods to keep weeds under control | Gardening Hacks | Gardening Australia

Hannah shares her simple, stress-free methods to keep various weeds under control in a productive garden. Subscribe 🔔 🤍 If you don’t manage weeds in the vegie patch, they will compete with your produce, stealing nutrients and smothering seedlings. They could even escape to other parts of the garden or bushland. There are a few simple things you can do to keep them under control and give you the confidence to tackle any that slip through the cracks! There are many species of weeds with many different growth types. The key to managing all of them is to get in early, before the roots are established and before they set seed and spread! Perennial weeds: Weeds like Wild Sorrel and Twitch Grass live and reproduce over many years. These two species also spread via rhizomes, so you need to dig deep and carefully to remove all parts of the plant. Anything left behind can turn into a new plant! Some perennial weeds have very long, strong tap roots, like wild fennel and dock. Try levering these out with a garden fork. Annual weeds: Annual weeds like Milk Thistle and Chickweed are often small and go through their life cycle very quickly – but if left to flower, they can produce thousands of seeds per plant and thus never-ending generations of plants. Mulch beds well in the warmer months to smother these weeds and stirrup hoes are useful for those that pop up between rows of vegies. Silage tarps: When Hannah prepares new beds, she smothers the soil to kill off both perennial and annual weeds. First, she cuts finished vegies such as broad beans, off at the base rather than pulling them out roots and all. This is to reduce soil disturbance, which weeds love! Next, the soil gets a good feed with compost and a deep soak, before being covered with a silage tarp. This method encourages weeds to germinate but then die off as there is no sunlight. It also activates the soil biology and heats up the weeds which breaks down the weed waste. Hannah leaves silage tarps on a bed for 6 weeks in warm months and up to 3 months over winter. Weeding will always be a part of gardening so the best thing to do is match the right tools and tricks to the plant and get in early. It can also be quite therapeutic! Featured Plants (all weeds): WILD SORREL - Rumex acetosella TWITCH GRASS - Elymus repens MILK THISTLE - Sonchus oleraceus CHICKWEED - Stellaria media WILD FENNEL - Foeniculum vulgare DOCK - Rumex crispus Filmed on Muwinina Country & Hobart, Tas _ Gardening Australia is an ABC TV program providing gardening know-how and inspiration. Thanks for watching.....🌞✌😎 Business enquiries: quickcuts🤍bossmgmtgrp.com - FAQ's: Q: Do you worry about snakes? A: I have never even seen a snake in 4 years on the job. Q: Where are you located? A: We are from Hobart, Tasmania, Australia 🦘🦘🦘. Q: Which equipment do you use? A: We use mostly STIHL power equipment (battery and petrol) and commercial Honda self-propelled mowers. Q: How much do the jobs cost? A: Sorry, I prefer not to talk about costs! Q: What happened to Nick? A: Nick was offered a full-time position at his other job as a Political admin! Q: Why don't you use tarps instead of cans? A: Tarps are too difficult to move through small spaces and lift into the trailer. The same for wheelbarrows, they are only good for unloading the trailer! Q: Why are the hot water cylinders outside? A: I'm not really sure to be honest, maybe something to do with space & maintenance, but either way, it really is poor heat efficiency! Q: Why are you cutting so close to your employee! A: I'm not cutting too close to my workers, they are standing too close to where I am working! All of my workers have been told numerous times about standing too close to the tools and about the hazards involved! Q: Why do your workers do all the lifting and carrying? A: Basically, they are employed to carry things and I pay them well, to do the job required. Q: You work so well together, how do you do it? A: That's the magic of editing. My workers are basically given instructions on what to do, I just edit it all out, so the videos look seamless! Restoration, Transformation, Garden, DIY.

In this episode of Garden Talk, I interview Locke Box. He grows both indoors as well as outdoors and he recently made the switch from using salt-based fertilizers (often referred to as synthetic) to using organic inputs - and that’s what we are going to get into in today’s episode. He talks all about how he used to grow with synthetic nutrients and how he now does it fully organic. What type of plants do you like to grow? Peppers, lettuce, tomatoes, citrus trees, basil, kale, grapes, house plants, let us know in the comments section below. Around 20 years ago my parents created the first half of the garden and it has been growing using organic principles from day 1. Today, there is a lot of permaculture inspiration and almost every bed is no dig, however, for crops like Jerusalem artichokes (sunchokes) it is almost impossible to harvest them without digging! 75 days of gardening, Harvest and bring to the market, living in off grid cabin hut Bushcraft Ep. 12. Hello friends! My name is Thanh, have a nice day! More than 2 months ago, I started coming up here to reclaim this land, with the dream of reclaiming crops, raising livestock, building myself a farm with many kinds of clean vegetables, raising livestock. have lived and faced the rainy weather and wild animals here until today for more than 2 months. Today my house and small garden have been completed after 75 days, this video I would like to summarize the process I have built. Let's temporarily call this part 1 "Building". The first day I came here, I cleared the grass, cleared the ground and found materials to build the wooden house. I have found some dead trees and some fallen trees due to landslides for materials. but the quantity of materials is small, so I transport the wood from home to here by road. It took me a long time for this footwork, because of the steep terrain, but it was okay I made it through. and I have built a wooden hut every day to shelter and combine gardening and growing vegetables, this part I temporarily call part 1, and will release part 2 "Call the harvest". Until today this garden has become beautiful with a green color of the vegetables I have grown. Today is the first day I harvested the fruit and harvested the first vegetables to bring to the market. We look forward to your support. Thanks very much ! -Hello everyone, have a great day. My name is Thanh, and I live in a remote rural area in the mountainous northern province of Vietnam. I'm on a life-building journey in the woods. The journey ahead is still very long. Please click subscribe to the channel to follow and support me. Thank you #buildinglife #offgrid #cabin
