Chitrabhanu (July 26, 1922 – April 19, 2019) was a prominent figure in American Jainism. He was one of the co-founders of JAINA. After spending some time in Africa and Europe, he came to the USA in 1971 at the invitation of Harvard Divinity School. In 1973, he founded the Jain Meditation International Center in Manhattan, New York City. He was among the early promoters of Yoga in USA. Jain munis, also known as Jain ascetics, are individuals who have chosen to renounce the material world and live a life of extreme self-discipline and asceticism. One aspect of this lifestyle is a rejection of clothing as a symbol of their detachment from the material world. Jain munis believe that wearing clothes is a form of attachment to the physical body, and that by renouncing clothing, they can more easily focus on spiritual pursuits and attain liberation from the cycle of reincarnation.
