Many of the crimes in New Orleans are being committed by the city’s youth. Some say the solution is to put pressure on City leaders to be tougher on criminals. Others say that’s only part of the equation. Today, at Einstein Academy in New Orleans East, a former member of No Limit Records is trying to fill in the gaps by reaching out directly to students. McKinley Phipps was granted Clemency by Gov. John Bel Edwards last April for a manslaughter charge. Phipps, who went by “Mac” in his No Limit days, maintained he was innocent for the 21 years he served of his 30-year sentence. Read full story: 🤍

Former No Limit artist Mac was granted parole after serving 20 years in prison during a recent hearing, at which Mac and his parents were present to hear the verdict.  There was a unanimous vote to grant Mac, born McKinley Phipps, Jr., immediate parole, with Board Vice Chair Jim Wise telling Mac that he considers him "very lucky." Board member Victor Jones also told Mac that he was going to take a chance on him by granting him parole, and he wished him good luck. Board Chair Sheryl M. Ranatza pointed out Mac's "excellent" prison record and his family support for her reason for granting him parole. Mac's parents were present during the hearing, and his father was seen crying tears of joy after learning that he would be reunited with his son after decades of being apart.  Mac spoke to VladTV in 2016 about being sentenced to 30 years in 2001, and the events that led to his arrest and trial. Speaking about his lyrics being used in his trial, Mac stated, "We're in this to make this money and we're feeding a market that demands this type of content. At the end of the day, I wasn't walking around shooting people in real life, and I wasn't walking around selling drugs to people in real life. In fact, I don't talk about selling drugs in my songs because that's something that I never did, and any violent content that I spit in my songs [were] basically stuff I know people wanted to hear. And if that could be used against me in court, that is dangerous."

And Mac isn't the first: From a century-old folk tune to Ice-T's "Cop Killer," we examine the history of policing Black creativity to reveal a phenomenon that's become common practice in courtrooms — using lyrics as Exhibit A. Louisiana Board of Pardons and Committee on Parole officially granted McKinley “Mac” Phipps Jr. parole. His specific date of release remains unknown, however he is one long step closer to freedom. The former No Limit rapper has served 21 years of a 30-year sentence for the shooting death of a young fan at a small concert in Slidell, Louisiana. Phipps has maintained his innocence and involvement in the crime throughout his incarceration. Supporting this claim is another man’s confession to the crimes and a witness recanting her testimony, along with additional supporting evidence. “Today marks the end of a long fight for justice,” says McKinley’s wife, Angelique Phipps. “Today we are looking towards a brighter future for our family. We are grateful to all of those who have never wavered in their support of Mac’s innocence.” McKinley “Mac” Phipps Jr. appeared before the Louisiana Board of Pardons and Committee on Parole on June 22, 2021. The three members of the Board unanimously voted in favor of Phipps receiving immediate parole.

McKinley "Mac" Phipps, also referred to as "Mac the Camouflage Assassin", was sentenced to 30 years in prison for manslaughter in the shooting death of a teen fan in 2001. Now having served 16 years of his sentence he talks to DJ Vlad about being a 24-year-old No Limit celebrity to having it all stripped away in the blink of an eye. Although Mac will celebrate his 39th birthday behind prison walls, he explains what happened that night and why he feels police covered up their mistakes and pinned him for the murder despite evidence proving his innocence. In addition, Mac says he believes that a jury of white men and women over the age of 40 didn't help his case, especially when the prosecutors played his music in court to make him appear barbaric. "We're in this to make this money and we're feeding a market that demands this type of content.
